"You
don't truly appreciate your breath until you struggle to catch it."
Over the
last several years, I have had the privilege of organizing preventive lung
health camps in residential communities, corporate offices, and social
organizations through Akshar Pulmo Care. Every camp reminds me of one simple
truth: prevention doesn't just detect disease—it changes lives.
People often ask me, "Why should I attend a lung health camp if I feel perfectly fine?"
My answer
is always the same: because lung diseases often begin silently. By the time
symptoms become obvious, valuable time may already have been lost.
Let me share three stories that continue to inspire me.
The Eight-Year-Old Who Thought He Was "Weak"
One Sunday morning, a young couple brought their eight-year-old son to one of our preventive camps. They weren't particularly worried. They simply mentioned that he avoided sports, became breathless while running, and was usually the last child to finish physical activities at school.
Many assumed he was simply "not athletic."
During the screening and subsequent consultation with our pulmonologist, further evaluation suggested that he had asthma. With timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and guidance, his parents finally understood why their son had struggled for years.
What touched me most was not the diagnosis—it was the relief on the parents' faces. They realized their child wasn't lazy or weak. He simply needed the right medical care.
Sometimes,
one screening can change a child's confidence, school life, and future.
A Second Chance for a Young Professional
Another participant,
a man in his thirties, attended one of our camps even though he had previously
been diagnosed with a lung condition. He admitted that after feeling better, he
had gradually stopped taking his medications and discontinued follow-up with
his treating doctor.
At the camp, his lung assessment showed that his condition still required attention.
After
discussing the findings, he consulted Dr. Jaykumar Mehta at Akshar Pulmo Care.
His treatment was restarted, his concerns were addressed, and he understood why
regular follow-up and adherence to medication are essential in chronic lung
diseases.
His story
reminded me that treatment doesn't end with a prescription. Education, trust,
and continuous follow-up are equally important.
The Gratitude of an Elderly Couple
Not every
memorable moment comes from discovering disease.
One elderly couple attended our free lung health camp simply because they were curious. After completing their screening and learning about lung health, they came to me before leaving.
They smiled and said, "Thank you for organizing this camp. We regularly check our blood sugar and blood pressure, but today we realized that we have never really thought about our lungs."
Those words stayed with me.
Sometimes, awareness itself is the greatest outcome of preventive healthcare.
Prevention Is the Best Prescription
These stories reinforce something I have believed throughout my career in healthcare administration: healthcare should begin before illness begins.
Our preventive lung health camps include simple yet valuable assessments such as oxygen saturation measurement, pulmonary function testing (PFT/spirometry), risk assessment, and consultation with our pulmonologist whenever needed.
Again and again, we identify people with reduced lung function who had dismissed their symptoms as ageing, poor fitness, seasonal allergies, or "just a cough."
Early
detection gives them something incredibly valuable—time. Time to begin
treatment, prevent complications, and continue living active, healthy lives.
How You Can Protect Your Lungs
Protecting
your lungs doesn't always require complicated medical interventions. Small,
consistent habits make a significant difference:
- Don't ignore a cough lasting more than three weeks.
- Avoid
smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke.
- Wear
appropriate respiratory protection when exposed to dust, pollution, or
occupational hazards.
- Stay
physically active and include breathing exercises in your routine.
- Keep
recommended vaccinations up to date.
- If you
have asthma, allergies, COPD, a history of smoking, or prolonged exposure to
pollution, consider regular lung function screening.
Every Breath Matters
The most
rewarding part of every camp isn't the number of people we screen.
It's seeing a child gain the opportunity to play freely.
It's watching someone restart treatment before their disease progresses.
It's hearing an elderly couple leave with a new appreciation for the lungs that quietly support every moment of life.
As healthcare professionals, we often treat disease. But as a community, we have the opportunity to prevent it.
Because when we protect our lungs, we protect our ability to work, laugh, play with our children, climb stairs, celebrate milestones, and simply enjoy life.
Never wait for breathlessness to remind you how precious your lungs are.
Let's make
prevention a habit—not a last resort.
